Our Story
On 17th June of the year 1992, a group of social workers from Khangshim and Kakching, belonging to different communities came together to establish Weaker Sections Development Council (WSDC).
A voluntary organization formed out of the sheer belief that those who can must do some for those who can’t, WSDC has found itself working on varied issues of development, gender, livelihood security, child rights, citizen rights, etc.
However, for WSDC, the 4 issues of Indigenous Rights, Livelihood Security, Youth empowerment and Gender have always been the focal points through which all other issues are understood. These 4 focal points are further sifted through another core aspect of whether or not the weaker sections are the beneficiaries for which the organization as a whole stands.
The formation of WSDC coincided with the worst ethnic conflict of our times in Manipur. The Naga-Kuki conflict as all conflicts inevitably exhibit, again showed that women and children were the worst affected group. Another long term consequence of the conflict was the loss of traditional sources of livelihood prompting mass migrations towards urban areas.
